Azerbaijan ups oil transportation

In January to July 2009, cargo transportation made up 106.3 million tons of cargo, or 0.6% more than the same period of 2008, the Azerbaijan State Statistics Committee reported.

Of the total volume of transported cargo, 72.7 percent accounted for of the private sector. In January to July, of the total volume of transported cargo, 47.9 percent was transported by cars, 34.1 percent - pipelines, 10.9% - railway and 7 percent - ships.

Passenger transportation totaled 739.9 million people or 7.4 percent more than January-July 2008. The share of private sector in the passenger transportation made up 82.3 percent. The passenger transportation by cars made up 82.4 percent and metro - 17 percent.

Azerbaijan State Railway Department (ASRD) transported 11.6 million tons of cargo compared to 16.4 million tons the last year.

The cargo shipping via sea rose by 12.5 percent over the same period of 2008 to 7.5 million tons. Some 74.1 percent of cargo deliveries fell on oil and oil products, while 25.9 percent was dry cargo. All cargo deliveries were implemented under the international operations.

The volume of cargo processed in Azerbaijani ports was 2.9 million tons in January to July 2009.

In January to July 2009, cargo transportation by vehicles made up 50.9 million tons, or 7.1 percent more than 2008. Passenger transportation comprised 609.7 million people, or 7.1 percent more, with 96.6 percent of people using buses and 3.5 percent - vehicles.

Nearly 125.9 million passengers used metro services with a rise of 9.1 percent.

In January to July 2009, the passenger transportation via airways made up 642,600 people, including 9.3% implemented by private sector.

In this period, the export via oil pipelines made up 29.2 million tons compared to 28.7 million tons in 2008. During this period, 75.5% of oil was transported via the BTC. Some 22.1 million tons of oil was shipped via this oil pipeline from Baku as compared to 21.8 million tons in the same period of 2008.

Transportation via gas pipelines made up 7.1 billion cu.m or 13.3 percent more than in January to July 2008. About 3.2 billion cu.m. of gas was transported via South Caucasus Pipeline during the reported period.

In January to July 2009, 21.1 million tons of cargo and 99.4 million passengers were transported via the Eurasian corridor.
