Turkmenistan is implementing a project on modernization of the railway line from Serhetabat to the Afghan station Turgundy, the Turkmen Dovlet Habarlary state news agency reported.

This project is based on the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the ministries of railway transport of Turkmenistan and Afghanistan in Ashgabat.

The document envisages the capital repair of the railway line, which has a length of 13 kilometers.

The implementation of this project will create additional prerequisites for the development of the economy of Afghanistan, the strengthening of the role of small and medium-sized businesses in this country through the growth of freight turnover and the supply of various products – from the import of oil products to Afghanistan to the export of Afghan vegetables and fruits, minerals and other goods, says the report.

All this will allow increasing the capacity of the Turgundi station, will strengthen its importance for the trade turnover of Afghanistan, which has no access to the sea.

The Ministry of Railway Transport of Turkmenistan transported 13,202 cars with cargo in 2016, and 7,886 cars in ten months of 2017 through the Turgundy station.

The construction of a railway from Turkmenistan to Afghanistan – along the Atamyrat-Ymamnazar-Akina route – was completed in the autumn of 2016.

The sides are actively cooperating to continue the laying of the steel route in Afghanistan, according to the report.

The railway is planned to be extended to the border with Tajikistan, making it a significant segment of the Asian international railway corridor.

This project is aimed at including Afghanistan as an integral part of the regional transportation network.
