Soon, Iran will import 90,000 heads of sheep, said Hamid Varnaseri, managing director of the State Livestock Affairs Logistics (SLAL) Inc. affiliated with the Iranian Ministry of Agriculture, Trend reports via Tasnim News Agency.
By the end of current week (a week ends on Friday in Iran), Iran will have imported 50,000 heads of sheep, Varnaseri said.
He added that in next stages, 90,000 heads of sheep will be imported to the country.
Along with the imports of livestock, the price of red meat will decrease in Iran, Varnaseri said.
Number of companies involved in livestock imports is 170, he said, adding that 90 companies import meat to the country.
The director noted that Iran's imports of mutton have doubled in the current Iranian year (started March 21, 2018).
Lately, the price for one kilo of mutton has increased to 1.2 million rials (roughly $28.5). In order to balance or decrease the meat prices, Iran has increased red meat and livestock imports from various countries.
