Mexico,U.S. energy ministers meet on cross-border oil fields

Oil&Gas Materials 9 April 2009 06:15 (UTC +04:00)

Mexican Secretary of Energy Georgina Kessel Martinez and her U.S. counterpart Steven Chu met on cross-border oil fields and renewable energy, said a statement of the Mexican government.

The two ministers met during Kessel's visit to the United States, Xinhua reported.

The statement said that Kessel had underlined the urgency of Mexico-U.S. talks on cross-border fields. Some Mexicans feared that the oil extraction on the U.S. side of the borderline could end up sucking oil from the Mexican side.

Mexico and the United States have an agreement on refraining from exploring oil resources within 10 km of their shared border, but the agreement will expire in 2011.
