Share of over-counter transactions in national currency grows in Azerbaijan

The Azerbaijani National Depositary Center (NDC) registered 97 over-the-counter (OTC) purchase/sale transactions amounting to 160.4 mllion manat ($94.3 million) from January through May 2020, Trend reports referring to the NDC's statistical data on June 8.

The total number of OTC transactions decreased by 146 (2.1 times) compared to the same period of 2019, while their share in the national currency decreased by 22.5 percent to make up 97 transactions (71.8 percent of the total number). In US dollars, 38 transactions (28.2 percent) were made, which is a growth of more than two times compared to the same period of 2019 (16 transactions).

The total volume of registered OTC transactions, including in national currency and dollars – 142 million manat ($183.5 million) and 18.2 million manat ($10.7 million), respectively, showed drop by 4.7 times compared to the first five months of 2019.

The share of the volume of transactions made in the national currency climbed by 42.6 percent to make up 88.6 percent of the total volume. Accordingly, the share of transactions made in foreign currency decreased by 42.6 percent due to a cut in the volume of registered transactions in the national currency by 22.6 times.

In May 2020, the volume of transactions in dollars sharply soared, showing the maximum growth from the beginning of the year. During the month, five transactions worth 16.2 million manat ($9.5 million) were made, which is 89 percent of the total volume of transactions in foreign currency.

The volume of transactions in the national currency in 2020 increases and decreases from month on month.
