BAKU, Azerbaijan, December 3. This week it has become known that the master plan for the second construction phase of the Baku Port's expansion will be designed by the Dutch Royal HaskoningDHV consultancy by mid-2023, Trend reports.

As part of the second phase, it is scheduled to increase the port's capacity to 25 million tons and 500,000 TEU containers per year.

In addition, it was reported that the member countries of the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TITR) need to accelerate the integration of electronic systems for the digitalization of cargo traffic. The freight transportation must be arranged in a way simplifying border crossing as much as possible.

This week it has also been reported that the Baku International Sea Port plays a key role in the development of the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TITR), known as the Middle Corridor. The EU sees the growing cargo movement along the Middle Corridor and predicts that this rise will continue in the upcoming years. The EU also intends to support the Port's initiative of switching to green technology. In this regard, negotiations to install solar panels on the Port's area are underway.

In addition, it has been noted that Romania and Azerbaijan are interested in the development of the Middle Corridor linking Europe and Asia with the ports of Baku and Constanta, which are are transport hubs and are located in geographically advantageous places.

The role of Azerbaijan in the international cargo transportation has significantly increased. Investments in the development of rail and road transport continue. Active work is also being carried out on the liberated lands, the construction of the Horadiz-Aghband road is planned to be completed by the end of 2023.
