BAKU, Azerbaijan, January 11. The Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Line Group (IRISL) plans to purchase new ships and containers worth about $2.5 billion within 4 years (March 21, 2022 through March 20, 2026), CEO of the IRISL, Mohammad Reza Modarres Khiabani said, Trend reports referring to Maritime News Agency of Iran.

He made the remark at the 1st National Conference on Maritime Civilization and Path of Development in Chabahar city of Sistan and Baluchestan Province (south-eastern Iran).

According to Modarres Khiabani, the IRISL plans to spend more than $2.15 billion on the purchase of new ships and $325 million on the purchase of new containers.

The CEO noted that currently, the IRISL Group has 137 ships. The total cargo capacity of the mentioned ships is 5 million tons. Some 77 new ships are planned to be added to the group’s ships.

“In addition, the shipping group has 194,000 containers. From the beginning of the current Iranian year (March 21, 2022) to January 11, 2023, a total of 40,000 TEU containers worth $120 million have been purchased,” he said.

Modarres Khiabani also pointed out that the IRISL Group transported 16 million tons of cargo during the first seven months of the current Iranian year (March 21 through October 22, 2022), which is 4 percent more than the same period last Iranian year.
