BAKU, Azerbaijan, January 23. Kyrgyz farmers saw an increase in the volume of sugar beet harvest in 2022, Trend reports citing the National Statistical Committee of Kyrgyzstan.

According to statistical data, a total of 468,100 tons of sugar beet were harvested during the last year, which is 28 percent more than in 2021.

As the National Statistical Committee noted, the increase in the production of root crops is due to an increase in sugar beet yield by 45 percent compared to 2021.

Sugar beet is the only agricultural crop in Kyrgyzstan used for sugar production. It is grown only in the Chuy and Talas regions. The main volume of sugar beet, according to the Ministry of Economy, was processed by two enterprises of the Chuy region: Koshoy OJSC and Kaindy-Kant OJSC.

Agriculture is the backbone of Kyrgyzstan’s rural economy. It employs about 40 percent of the country’s labor force and accounts for about 20 percent of the gross domestic product. During the last year, Kyrgyz farmers produced agricultural products for 354.6 billion soms ($4.1 billion), which is an increase of 7.3 percent compared to 2021.
