IsDB approves multi-million financing for Rogun HPP construction in Tajikistan

DUSHANBE, Tajikistan, May 2. The Islamic Development Bank's (IsDB) Executive Directors' Council has approved $550 million in financing for the construction of the Rogun hydroelectric power plant (HPP) in Tajikistan, Trend reports.

According to the Ministry of Economy and Commerce of Tajikistan, of this amount, $150 million will be contributed by the IsDB from its own funds, while the remaining $400 million will come from Arab development funds. This agreement was reached between Tajikistan's Minister of Economic Development and Trade and Authorized Representative of the IsDB, Zavqi Zavqizoda, and the President of the IsDB Group, Muhammad Sulaiman Al Jasser, in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia).

Zavqizoda expressed gratitude to the IsDB for its support and requested an increase in funding for priority sectors of the national economy, including the development of green energy. Particularly, he emphasized projects like the Rogun HPP and the Guliston – Farkhor- Panj – Dusti road.

In response, the President of the IsDB Group expressed readiness to increase financing for projects in the mentioned sectors and further strengthen cooperation.

To note, the IsDB Group has allocated investment projects totaling $753.4 million across various sectors of Tajikistan's economy to date. Additionally, within the framework of bilateral cooperation for 2023–2026, the IsDB Group plans to allocate over $235 million for the implementation of the country's priority projects.

The Rogun HPP is a hydroelectric power station under construction on the Vakhsh River with an installed capacity of 3600 MW. In total, it is planned to install six units, each with a projected capacity of 600 MW.

The average annual electricity generation at the Rogun HPP is expected to exceed 17 billion kWh. The height of the dam is 335 meters.
