Turkmenistan taking part in session of ExCom of UN High Commissioner for Refugees

The delegation of Turkmenistan headed by the Deputy Chairman of the Migration Service of Turkmenistan is participating to the 70th Session of the Executive Committee of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees Programme which is being held in the UN office building in Geneva during the period of October 7-11, 2019, Trend reports referring to Turkmenistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The session was opened by the Chairman of the Executive Committee of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees Programme, Ambassador of Algeria Boudjemaa Delmi.
After the opening speech of the chairman, the UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi gave speeches during the opening of the session.
Then, the high level segment on the issues of statelessness took place. Here the problems of statelessness were discussed that affect millions of people across the world and bring to devastating consequences depriving them of their lawful rights, leaving them beyond political and economic influence, unprotected and exposed to discrimination.
In November 2014, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) approved a plan of action to eradicate statelessness for 2014-2024, which was enshrined in a resolution of the UN General Assembly. In 2011-2018, 8,880 people were accepted into the citizenship of Turkmenistan.
