Iranian MP Alireza Zakani said that ex-president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad asked him in 2006 to cooperate to change members of Iran's Assembly of Experts who elect Supreme Leader, Jamnews portal reported.

"Ahmadinejad asked me to participate in the administration and cooperate for replacing old members of the Assembly of Experts with youth," he said.

He made the remarks in the meeting of Independent Union of Islamic Student Association.

Ahmadinejad also planned to attend the meeting, but canceled later, the report said.

According to the Iranian Constitution, the assembly of Experts is in charge of supervising, dismissing and electing the Supreme Leader. In the event of his death, resignation or dismissal, the Experts shall take steps within the shortest possible time to appoint a new Leader.

Alireza Zakani is a hardline conservative politician who was supporting Ahmadinejad in his first year's of his presidency but later joined his critics due to Ahmadinejad`s dispute with Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khmanei.

During the last months, Ahmadinejad's critics are growing in number.

Some conservatives are accusing Ahmadinejad that he was planning to boost his power in Iran's power structure against Supreme Leader.
