(IRNA) - An Iranian economic delegation is viewing an exhibition of Hong Kong's small and medium enterprises (SMEs), Iran's Consul General to Hong Kong said here on Thursday.

Speaking to IRNA, Abdollah Nekounam added that SMEs are the engines of Hong Kong's booming trade and service industry, reports Trend.

He said Hong Kong entrepreneurs, instead of producing commodities, produce services.

According to official statistics, the service industry in the country accounts for 95 percent of its gross domestic product (GDP).

Nekounam said the Iranian delegation, which has been in Hong Kong since Monday, has visited various modern establishments and facilities of this important trading port and observed their economic activities.

He added that the delegation, during a meeting with the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, spoke with managers of leading organizations and trade establishments in the country and discussed ways of bolstering bilateral economic cooperation.

He said the Iranian businessmen also visited Hong Kong's Hutchison Port, one of the biggest in container transport.

Trade exchanges between Iran and Hong Kong hit USD 251 million dollars in 2005. Iran exported USD 180 million worth of goods to Hongkong in that year.
