The chief conscription officer of the Iranian armed forces, Brigadier General Moussa Kamali said that increasing the mandatory military service by 3 months to 24 months which was earlier planned for current fiscal year (started on March 21) is postponed.

The issue is canceled for now and the increase would not be implemented in the current fiscal year, Kamali said.

The decision was made due to existence of needed staff and plans which was implemented for increasing the efficiency of the military forces, the official explained, Iran's state IRINN TV reported April 11.

In Iran, military service is mandatory for all males at the age of 18, however those who attend college immediately after high school can postpone military service.

Men who do not serve in the military or have not been exempted are ineligible for government jobs and typically are not hired for high-paying jobs. They also cannot apply for a passport.

Kamali further said that the 21-month military service will be cut by three months in case of being in operational areas and by two months in underprivileged areas.

In the case of being married, the term will be cut down by three months for each child, Kamali added.
