Georgian parliament adopts code on local self-government in first reading

Tbilisi, Georgia, Dec. 14

By Nana Kirtzkhalia - Trend:

The Georgian parliament adopted a draft code on the local self-government in the first reading on Friday. The bill was supported by 82 MPs and nobody voted against.

The parliamentary minority did not take part in the discussion and voting.

The bill regulates the relations with administrative-territorial local self-governing bodies, the powers of municipalities and its bodies, the status of the capital and its powers. The bill also regulates the participation of citizens in local self-government, the adoption of the budget, the economic activity, the state supervision and other issues.

According to the amendments, besides the existing five self-governing cities, there will be seven more cities. Thus, mayors will be elected in 12 self-governing cities through the direct election.
