NATO Special Representative to visit Baku on 9 June (UPDATE)

NATO Special Representative for the South Caucasus and Central Asia James Appathurai will visit Azerbaijan on June 9, NATO press-service said.

During the two-day visit Appathurai will meet with Azerbaijani officials to discuss all aspects of NATO-Azerbaijan cooperation. Appathurai is expected to have meetings at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Emergency Situations, State Border Service, the Parliament of Azerbaijan, etc.

Current visit will come as Appathurai's first visit to Baku in a position of Special Representative.

Mr. Appathurai will be accompanied by Mr. Steffen Elgersma, Euro-Atlantic Partners Integration and Partnership Directorate and Mr. Zbigniew Rybacki, NATO Liaison Officer in the Caucasus, Romanian Embassy in Baku said. The Embassy represents NATO in Azerbaijan.

The visit, originally scheduled for March, was postponed due to situation in Libya.

Appathurai, former Spokesperson of the Alliance, took the SR office in November 2010. He replaced Robert Simmons , who worked 7 years in this position.

The Special Representative is intended to support working contacts with regional leaders to develop the objectives of NATO in the region by contributing to regional security and further promoting cooperative programs of NATO.
