Azerbaijan's State Commission on Prisoners of War, Hostages and Missing Persons does not see any problems in returning the soldier of the Armenian army Hakob Injighulyan who crossed into Azerbaijan, the Commission's Secretary Shahin Sayilov told Trend on Wednesday.
According to Sayilov, the reasons of the soldier crossing over the contact line of the two countries' armed forces are being investigated. After this, in accordance with the soldier's will he will be returned to his own country or he may be sent to a third country.
The decision about the country to which the prisoner of war would want to go, may have been announced earlier at a meeting with the staff of the representative office of the Red Cross in Azerbaijan, Sayilov said.
"Everything will depend on the will of the prisoner of war. If he wants to go back to Armenia, then he will be returned. The State Commission does not see any problems," Sailov said.
The soldier of the Armenian Armed Forces Hakob Injighulyan crossed the contact line between Azerbaijani and Armenian Armed Forces in the direction of Aghdam region, in territories under the control of Azerbaijani Armed Forces on the night of August 7-8.
The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 per cent of Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.
Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the U.S. are currently holding peace negotiations.
Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council's four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
