There are Obstacles for Georgian Azerbaijanis Participation in Parliamentary Elections

Azerbaijan, Baku, 30 March / Trend corr. J.Babayeva / The first political party of Azerbaijanis in Georgia, founded for participation in the parliamentary elections on 21 May, cannot receive the State registration.

Fazil Aliyev, the former candidate for presidential post in Georgia and chairman of For Georgia party, stated to Trend by a telephone from Tbilisi that all political parties which appealed to the Justice Ministry for registration have already received the State registration, except his party.

"In spite of all technical mistakes in the document were corrected for several times the Ministry refuses to register the party. The party held recurrent founding meeting," Aliyev said.

The founding meeting of the party was held in Tbilisi on 3 February. On 4 February, the documents of the party were submitted to Georgian Justice Ministry. Under the Georgian legislation, registration appeal is considered within a month.

Aliyev's candidature was nominated to the President post by the National Assembly of Georgian Azerbaijanis and International Council of Georgian Azerbaijanis. In December, Aliyev refused from participation in presidential elections. Aliyev explained his decision by pressure by the Georgian State bodies.

Aliyev noted that the reason for delay in state registration of the party is the chairman of party is Azerbaijani by origin.

The term for application from political parties willing to participate in the parliamentary elections expired on 26 March.

Totally 150 MPs will be elected to the Georgian Parliament. Some 75 MPs will pass to the legislation body on party list.

"The party is planning to appeal to court if it cannot receive the state registration and stage protest action," Aliyev said.
