A street in Tbilisi maybe named after U.S. diplomat Richard Holbrooke in the near future.
Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili made the statement after the diplomat's death this week. He appealed to Tbilisi City Hall with this initiative and expressed hope for understanding and support.
"For the people of Georgia, Holbrooke was more than a reliable ally in Washington - he was a man who cared deeply about our young democracy and who understood Georgia's potential as an ally of the United States," he said.
Saakashvili also issued a decision to posthumously award Holbrooke with the Saint George Victory Order for promoting peace and democracy throughout the world, for his personal efforts to strengthen Georgian-U.S. relations, and for his special support provided for Georgia.
Holbrooke died at the age of 70 in Washington this week from aortic rupture. Holbrooke is best known for his part in signing the Dayton Agreements in 1995, which ended the civil war in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
