A Number of Women Accept Violence as a Lifestyle Head of State Committee

Hijran Huseynova, the chairman of the State Committee on Family, Woman and Child Problems, stated at the final conference on the project Stop violence against Woman that many Azerbaijani women are unaware of their rights. Some women accept violence as a lifestyle, she added.

According to Huseynova, the appeal to the State Commissions is linked with the facts of violence. Huseynova stressed the necessity of conducting enlightenment work to prevent violence amongst women. She informed the participants at the conference on the project of Stop violence against Woman, carried out jointly with the State Commission, UN Fund for Population, the Youth Organization of Refugees and Internally Displaced People.

The participants at the conference watched a film dedicated to women's and children's rights.

In her report on Violence against Women Violation of Human Rights, Nigina Abbaszade, an adviser on gender and public issues of the UNFP, noted that violence against women prevents women to stand up for themselves in public, causes violations in child psychology and impedes the development of the country's economy.

Sona Salmanova, the Deputy Chairman of the Constitution Court of Azerbaijan, delivered a report on Azerbaijani legislation in the sphere of women rights'. She spoke of women's rights which are specified in the Constitution of Azerbaijan and other laws.

Nazim Alekberov, the Azerbaijani Deputy Justice Minister, gave a report on Legal State of Convicted Women. He emphasized that the number of crimes committed by women are not so high in Azerbaijan. Furthermore, the Azerbaijani law is not harsh in respect to women. Alekberov stressed that the majority of crimes committed by women are linked with family situations and financial difficulties.
