Azerbaijan, Baku / corr Trend E.Huseynli / A group of members of the World Azerbaijani Congress (WAC) and the Azerbaijani National Independence Party (ANIP) attempted to hold a rally in front of the Iranian embassy in Baku on 22 August. They were protesting against the visit of the Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejat's to Azerbaijan.
At 12:00 the quick response police division blocked the road to the Iranian embassy from the protestors and prevented them rallying. Active protestors were detained.
Sabail Police Precinct #9 of Baku reported that eleven protestors were detained for causing disorder but were released after they were questioned.
The police prevented journalists' presence near the Iranian embassy and banned any filming.
The organization attempted to stage the protest action and consider Ahmadinejat's visit to Azerbaijan is not within moral bounds.
According to official data, around 35mln Azerbaijanis reside in Iran. Some political parties of Azerbaijan and public unions criticize the Iranian authorities for violation of rights in the South Caucasus.
