Court rules to bring military hazing victim to courthouse by force

A military hazing trial was postponed after the victim refused to appear at the Military Court in Baku.

The court decided to bring victim Samir Abdullayev to court by force.

The trial will proceed on Feb. 25.

A videotape showing soldiers being beaten at an Azerbaijani military hospital was posted on Internet. The clip was filmed at the Defense Ministry's Alat Military Hospital in February.

The Military Prosecutor's Office filed a lawsuit on misconduct against the soldiers.

Famil Ganiyev, Adil Abbasov, Jabir Yusubov, Rahid Jafarov and Elkhan Mammadov have been held accountable for the hazing. The court recognized 5 men as victims. Three rescinded their compliants.

Azerbaijani ombudsman Elmira Suleymanova said control over the army must be strengthened to prevent bullying and beatings.

"Public control must be exercised over military units and prisons," she said earlier.
