The Azerbaijani National Academy of Sciences will focus on providing scientific institutions with modern equipment in 2011, the academy's president told Trend today.

"The funds allocated by the academy were increased by 2-3 percent according to the state budget for 2011," Mahmud Karimov said. "These funds will be spent mainly on buying modern scientific equipment and devices."

He also noted that the academy has already started to renovate the scientific equipment base of its institutions.

"Modern science cannot develop without a modern material and technical basis," Kerimov said.

At present, several departments - physics and mathematics, technical, chemical, humanities, social and the Nakhchivan regional branch -- operate under the academy. The academy includes scientific departments, research institutes, scientific service companies, commissions, committees, scientific societies, and scientific publications. The Nakhchivan research branch includes broad research areas.

About 66 organizations, including 48 scientific research institutions, nine design and technological enterprises, four museums, two observatories, three research and scientific centers and the Azerbaijani National Encyclopedia Center operate in the academy.
