BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 2. In order for the green transition to be successful, it is important that staff training is based on common standards, the vice-president strategy, Sales and Marketing Communication Middle East, Caspian and Africa, Bureau Veritas' Nahla Abid said, Trend reports.
She made the statement during a panel discussion on “Meeting the Just Transition challenge for the Oil and Gas sector” on the third day of the international conference at the Climate Action Week in Baku.
“First, staff development is crucial. People should be able to switch industries and adjust their abilities. But how to ensure mobility? A standardized system and methodological framework is needed to relate new standards to training. Example: international ISO standards. Reducing emissions is the topic. Even if we're looking ahead, we must consider where the journey begins. Why pursue renewable energy? Because we want lower emissions. But first, what are the present emissions? International standards like ISO 14064 or ISO 14044 are needed to estimate them consistently throughout Azerbaijan, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and Europe. These standards standardize emissions calculations. Staff training should be standardized for this reason. A individual doing the same job in Azerbaijan, Europe, or Africa will have the same knowledge and qualifications,” she said.
According to her, when discussing a fair transition between sectors, it is important to make sure that the level of knowledge and skills of employees meets the requirements of the industry.
“This, in turn, makes the industries more attractive for investors. When it comes to hydrogen-related projects, there are many discussions today about new projects in this field. However, few of them reach financial close. Why? Because developers face a lack of standards. How can a project be implemented if banks are not willing to invest in it due to a lack of standardization? Having standards is necessary to ensure that the workforce has the right skills and can ensure that the project is implemented safely, with minimal risks and without impact on the community,” she added.
