Azerbaijan, Baku / Тrend corr K. Zarbaliyeva / Eighteen Azerbaijani citizens now imprisoned in Georgia have applied to the Georgian Justice Ministry for extradition. According to the head of the International Cooperation Department at the Azerbaijani Justice Ministry, Zavar Gafarov, Azerbaijan has begun implementation of the corresponding measures. He said that the prisoners can be extradited to their country in case they appeal.

According to Gafarov, some 170 Georgian citizens serve their sentences in Azerbaijan. If they appeal for extradition to their country, it will be done within the framework of corresponding documents signed between two countries and the conventions Azerbaijan and Georgia had joined. In total, some 400 foreigners are serving their sentences in Azerbaijani reformatories, with most of them being Georgian, Russian, and Iranian citizens.

The number of Azerbaijani citizens charged in Russian with drug-related crimes has recently increased.

Last year thirty-five Azerbaijani prisoners held in Russian reformatories were extradited to Azerbaijan.

Currently, fifteen Azerbaijanis serve their sentences in Turkey. One of them has applied for extradition to Azerbaijan.

Ten Azerbaijani citizens serve their sentences in Iran reformatories, mostly imprisoned for illegally crossing the border and other crimes.
