BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 12. Gas flows from Azerbaijan to Europe via the Trans-Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) increased by almost 50 percent, or 3 billion cubic meters (bcm), year-on-year over the first ten months of 2022, Trend reports via the International Energy Agency (IEA).

According to the IEA, the supply of gas to Europe through non-Russian pipelines has increased significantly over the reporting period, with Azerbaijan, Norway and Algeria as the largest contributors.

Pipeline deliveries to Europe grew by 5 percent (5 bcm) from Norway, while Algeria increased its exports to Europe by over 10 percent (3 bcm). As the agency noted, gas supplies from Azerbaijan and Norway are close to their nameplate capacity in 2022, whereas Algerian supplies have limited potential for increase.

According to the Ministry of Energy of Azerbaijan, from January through October 2022, Azerbaijani gas supplies to Europe reached 9.3 bcm out of the total 18.2 bcm of exported gas.

As the European section of the Southern Gas Corridor, TAP has the capacity to transport approximately 10 bcm per year to several markets in Europe. The pipeline is also designed with the potential to expand its throughput capacity up to 20 bcm per year.

TAP is strategically and economically important to Europe and essential in providing reliable access to a new source of natural gas. TAP plays a significant role in boosting Europe’s energy security, supply diversification, as well as decarbonization objectives.
