Uzbekistan names reasons for upcoming price rise for cigarettes, alcohol

In January-April 2019 prices for tobacco products in Uzbekistan increased by 23.5 percent, alcoholic beverages - by 12.4 percent compared to the same period last year, Trend reports with reference to the State Statistics Committee of Uzbekistan.

Moreover, non-food products increased in price by an average of 11.1 percent, food prices rose by 16 percent.

The resolution of the President of Uzbekistan dated December 26, 2018 states that the excise tax rate on manufactured cigarettes with or without filter is 117900 soums per 1000 cigarettes.

Starting March 1 of this year, the country introduced a combined excise tax on cigarettes produced in Uzbekistan, which, along with a fixed rate, provides for the introduction of an ad valorem rate of 4 percent of the cost of goods sold by the manufacturer, not including excise tax and value added tax.

Furthermore, an additional increase in the approved rates for alcohol and tobacco products is planned to 20 percent from July 1, 2019.
