Azerbaijan strengthens position as cotton-producing country

Azerbaijan is among the 100 countries that are developing cotton production, Trend reports referring to the Ministry of Agriculture of Azerbaijan.

The annual increase in average yield strengthens Azerbaijan’s position among countries engaged in cotton production.

Cotton growing is among the major agricultural sectors in the leading countries of the world. Currently, countries that are members of the G-20 – the US, Australia, Brazil, China, India and Mexico, among others – are the main producers of cotton globally.

In 2017-2018, 28.1 tons of raw cotton (without seeds) were produced globally, with 6.2 million tons produced in India, 6 million tons in China and 4.6 million tons in the US.

The US is the global leader in export of raw cotton (without seeds). In 2017-2018, the country exported 3.4 million tons of the product, which comprises 35.1 percent of total exports.

Brazil accounted for 9.3 percent of exports of raw cotton (without seeds), Australia for 8 percent, and Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and Tajikistan for 6.2 percent.

According to the estimates of the International Cotton Advisory Committee (ICAC), the total amount of state support directed to global cotton production in 2015-2016 amounted to $7.2 billion. The countries with the highest government support for cotton production are China ($ 5.3 billion), the US ($ 1.1 billion) and Turkey ($ 381 million).

Over the past year, more than 23 million manats of subsidies were paid to producers of raw cotton in Azerbaijan.
