Uzbekistan to be able to reduce fuel prices by joining EAEU

By Fakhri Vakilov - Trend:

Center for Economic Research and Reforms under the Administration of Uzbekistan’s President Shavkat Mirziyoyev presented a study to assess the impact of a possible entry of Uzbekistan into the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) in 14 leading universities of Uzbekistan, Trend reports citing Uzbek media.

The Center has been conducting this study since November 2019.

The analysis shows that in the field of air transport, integration with the EAEU until 2025 will not have an impact on this area. The reason for this is that the creation of a common air transport market in the EAEU zone is envisaged to start from 2025.

As part of the creation of a common market for air transport in the EAEU, starting in 2025 it will be necessary to create equal tariff conditions regarding the use of aviation infrastructure.

With regard to rail traffic, growth in import traffic is expected to be 10-15 percent. Moreover, due to the use of unified tariffs for transit of goods to/from Uzbekistan by transit through the territory of Russia and Kazakhstan to a EAEU member country, the transport costs will be reduced by $221.6 million, which will lead to a decrease in the share of the transport component in the final cost goods exported and imported by Uzbekistan.

With access to cheap diesel fuel from Kazakhstan, it is expected that fuel costs will be reduced by up to 20 percent, which will allow carriers to save up to $20 million a year.

The export of domestic fruits and vegetables will increase, thanks to reducing transport cost, simplification of trade and transit procedures for perishable products, adjusting of sanitary and phytosanitary standards and labeling and packaging requirements, etc.

Uzbek producers of large and small cattle and poultry meat will get access to cheaper and higher-quality feed from the EAEU countries. This will reduce the cost of production and increase the competitiveness of livestock industries in Uzbekistan.
