USAID continues to support Georgia in agriculture and environment

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Feb.2

By Tamilla Mammadova – Trend:

Minister of Environment and Agriculture of Georgia Levan Davitashvili met with USAID Mission Director for Georgia Peter Wiebler, Trend reports via Georgian media.

The parties discussed further plans for cooperation in the field of agriculture and ecology.

Davitashvili noted the economic situation in the country during the COVID-19 pandemic and spoke about the importance of the programs to be implemented in the field of agriculture.

“According to preliminary data for 2020, the added value created in agriculture, forestry and fisheries is 14 percent higher than in the same period in 2019. Last year, the cost of exporting hazelnuts was 44 percent higher and the quality of the hazelnut harvest was much higher, which is the result of the measures taken by USAID,” Davitashvili said.

As Wiebler noted, USAID has a new Strategic Action Plan that addresses climate change priorities.

The parties expressed the hope that cooperation in the future will be more successful and productive than it was during the pandemic. Wiebler noted that USAID continues to support Georgia in agriculture and the environment.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Minister of Environment and Agriculture Nino Tandilashvili and Head of USAID's Economic Growth Office in Georgia Marika Olson.
