Azneftyag Baku Oil Refinery Plant of the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) plans to produce 220,000 tons of oil bitumen - a maximum volume in the history of the plant in 2009, director of the plant Akbar Hajiev said on May 30.

Hajiyev said the plant produced 180,000 tons of oil bitumen in 2007, and 200,000 tons in 2008.

"Increasing bitumen production in the enterprise is connected with the increased needs of the country, especially during road construction. The demand for bitumen is growing and we have to produce this," Hajiyev said.

Azerbaijani oil products are produced at two SOCAR-owned Baku oil refineries with the total capacity of 20 million tons of oil per year. SOCAR annually processes roughly 7 million tons of oil produced from onshore and offshore fields through its owns funds.

In January to April 2009, the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) transferred roughly two million tons of oil for refining compared to 2.5 million tons in the same period of 2008.
