The Kazakh Tengizchevroil has paid a fine worth $1.1 billion tenge (over $6.7 million) in connection with excess gas burning for 11 months of 2010, the Atyrau prosecutor's office said today.

"Tengizchevroil carried out excess gas burning and polluted the atmosphere for 11 months in 2010," the statement said. "The Zhaiyk Caspian Environment Department ordered the company to reimburse 1.1 billion tenge to the state and to pay the state duty."

However, the oil company did not agree with the arguments of ecologists and challenged the claim. After considering all the circumstances, the court denied Tengizchevroil's claim. The state duty worth 33.3 million tenge ($224,500) was paid.
