Turkey has discovered gas reserves off the coast of the Karpas Peninsula, Trend reports referring to Turkish media.

It is reported that the total amount of oil and gas reserves is estimated at 170 billion cubic meters.

According to media reports, gas reserves were found during the exploration work carried out by a drilling vessel called “Yavuz”. At the same time, the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources of Turkey has not made any official statements in this regard.

Data from international vessel tracking sites show that “Yavuz” is located close to the Karpas Peninsula.

It was reported earlier that the EU is considering the introduction of restrictive measures against Turkey due to the exploration work carried out by Ankara off the coast of the island of Cyprus.

According to the media report, in light of the continued exploration work carried out by Turkey, the EU decided to suspend negotiations on the Comprehensive Air Transport Agreement and agrees not to hold the Association Council and further meetings of the EU-Turkey high-level dialogues for the time being. The issue is expected to be discussed at the July 15 meeting of EU foreign ministers on Brussels.

In addition, the Council of the EU will propose to reduce financial support for Turkey for 2020, and also call on the European Investment Bank to reconsider its activities in relation to Turkey. It is reported that the European Union is ready to impose even tougher sanctions on the country, should the country not cease exploration in these territories.
