BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 7. Iran intends to develop gas trade in the region, Iranian Deputy Oil Minister and CEO of the National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC) Majid Chegeni said, Trend reports.
The deputy minister noted that the Russian side made a proposal regarding Iran becoming a gas hub in the region. Currently, a special Iranian delegation is in Russia, and preliminary agreements have been reached in this regard. Work is continuing.
Chegeni also added that Iran is conducting discussions on gas exports to Oman and Pakistan.
"In addition, two rounds of discussions were held between the officials of the two countries on Iran’s gas export to Iraq, and a final agreement is expected to be reached soon," he said.
According to Chegeni, a round of discussions was also held with the Turkish side regarding Iran's gas exports to Türkiye. Türkiye is interested in extending the gas contract with Iran.
The extension of the contract on Iran's gas export to Türkiye is on the agenda of the Iranian Oil Ministry and the National Iranian Gas Company. Iran's gas export contract to Türkiye expires in 2026.
Talking about Iran’s gas imports from Turkmenistan, the CEO of NIGC noted that discussions between the two countries were held in Tehran and Ashgabat, and the agreement is expected to be signed within the next two weeks.
The deputy minister also pointed out that European countries have also held discussions with Iran about importing gas from Iran through Türkiye. However, these discussions did not end with a positive result.
Iran stands second in the world for gas reserves, with about 34 trillion cubic meters of gas. Reportedly, Iran's gas production capacity is more than 1 billion cubic meters. Iran exports only a small portion of the gas produced in the country, about six percent.
