Georgia takes important steps to support tourism

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Dec.21

By Tamilla Mammadova – Trend:

The Georgian government has taken important steps to support tourism as a particularly affected sector, said the Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Natia Turnava, Trend reports via Georgian media.

Turnava notes, that up to 2,000 hotels have benefited from the program of interest subsidy, and another 3700 will benefit from the program as well.

"2021 will be tense and full of challenges for the tourism sector again. Tourism is recovering in the medium term and not instantly. However, our tourism facilities have gained a unique experience with the quarantine program on how to serve their guests not only comfortably but also - safely. This will be quite relevant in the near future as well. We will focus on high-spending tourists or we will move towards a quality market," Turnava said.

All international flight restrictions are planned to be lifted from February in Georgia, she said.

According to the minister, despite the pandemic, infrastructure projects carried out by the Ministry of Economy have not been hampered, including airport expansion projects.

"The project to expand Kutaisi and Batumi International Airports will soon be completed, and we plan to lift all restrictions on international flights as early as February, and the upgraded infrastructure will host visitors and serve our citizens," the minister said.
