Cargo transportation in Azerbaijan from January through May 2020 plunges

Some 81.2 million tons of cargo were transported by different vehicles in Azerbaijan from January through May 2020, which is 10.3-percent decreased on annualized basis, Trend reports on June 12 referring to the Azerbaijani State Statistical Committee.

A big share of the total volume of cargo transportation (58.1 percent) accounted for the motor vehicles, which reached 47.2 million tons, a decrease of 17.1 percent.

More than one third the total cargo turnover (31.2 percent) accounted for pipelines. The volume of the transported oil decreased by 5.4 percent and amounted to 15.6 million tons. In turn, the volume of the transported gas increased by 12.3 percent and amounted to 9.6 million cubic meters of gas.

Some 3.1 percent (2.5 million tons) accounted for the cargo transportation by ships, which decreased by 1.3 percent. Meanwhile, 34.1 percent of the entire cargo transportation by ships accounted for the oil sector.

Some 7.4 percent (6 million tons) of the entire cargo transportation accounted for cargo transportation by trains from January through May 2020, which is by 2.9 percent more compared to the period from January through May 2019.

Only 0.2 percent of the entire cargo transportation in the country accounted for planes. Some 141,700 tons of cargo were transported by planes from January through May 2020.

From January through May 2020, 78 percent of the entire cargo transportation accounted for the private transport sector, which was by 13.7 percent less than in the first five months of 2019.
