BAKU, Azerbaijan, July 11. The new 5-year country partnership strategy (CPS) recently launched by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) for Kazakhstan is aligned with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Nariman Mannapbekov, ADB Country Director for Kazakhstan, told Trend.

According to him, overall, Kazakhstan is making progress toward achieving many SDG indicators.

"In the last Sustainable Development Report, Kazakhstan ranked 59-th out of 165 countries globally," Mannapbekov said.

In terms of SDGs that ADB will pay specific attention to Kazakhstan, the country director noted that ADB will support an increase of alternative and renewable energy generation as a share of total energy production, which corresponds to SDG 7 on affordable and clean energy.

"SDG 10 emphasizes lowering inequality within and among countries, which corresponds to the goal of reducing social imbalances among the country’s regions. An emphasis on strong institutions (SDG 16) will be supported by ADB’s goal to increase accountability, efficiency, and functionality of the state apparatus," he added.

In May this year, ADB launched a new CPS for Kazakhstan covering 2023-2027. The CPS aims to help accelerate resilient and sustainable growth for the people of Kazakhstan by focusing on three main development objectives: addressing climate change impacts and supporting decarbonization; promoting inclusive economic growth; and strengthening governance and developing capacity.

The Sustainable Development Goals are a set of 17 global goals adopted by the UN in September 2015.
