( RIA Novosti ) -Tajik police seized a total of 24 kilos ( 53 pounds) of heroin from an Afghan national Tuesday, a spokesman for the Interior Ministry said.
A total of 4 metric tons of drugs including 1 metric ton of heroin have been confiscated by police in the Central Asian republic in the first eight months of the year.
Over 78 kilos ( 172 pounds) of heroin have been seized in Russia as a result of 9 special operations by both Russian and Tajik police, the spokesman said.
The narcotics trade has become an acute problem for Tajikistan due to the continual flow of illegal drugs from neighboring Afghanistan, which supplies over 90% of the world's heroin.
