The final results of voting in connection with the recent elections of members of the People's Council (Halk Maslahats) and Gengeshy the local self-governance bodies will be announced soon, the Turkmen Central Commission for Elections and Referendums said on Monday.
Some 85.11 per cent of voters in the Akhal region voted for candidates in local self-governance bodies in the towns and settlements. There was an 84.50 per cent turnout in the Balkan region, 87.31 per cent the Dashogus region, 86.32 per cent the Lebap region and 85.75 per cent the Mary region.
The CEC said that full monitoring of all stages of the electoral process was conducted by national observers.
"They appreciated the elections," the information relayed. "The distinguishing feature was alternative, full transparency and openness."
According to the law, Gengeshy is entitled to determine the basic principles of economic, social and cultural development of their territories; to approve the local budget and report on its execution, to define measures for the rational use of natural resources and protection of the environment and to solve the question of submitting a proposal to the district administration about the need for building up the local area; to monitor the sanitary status of settlements, water communication, housing, enterprises, schools and other facilities.
The costs of preparation and holding of elections are funded solely by the Turkmen state budget.
