Uzbekistan sets key coal deposit in Surkhandarya in motion

TASHKENT, Uzbekistan, December 27. Modernization works have been completed at Surkhandarya’s Shargunkumir JSC, one of the largest coal deposits in Uzbekistan, Trend reports.

As per data provided by Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Mining and Geology, the modernization of the enterprise was carried out jointly with Chinese companies as part of an investment project worth $105.5 million.

The updated technical and technological base, as well as new equipment, will increase the volume of coal production to 900,000 tons per year. The modernized deposit is also said to create an additional 500 jobs.

Meanwhile, the region's extraction operations total 541,000 tons as of today. Uzbekistan intends to enhance coal extraction in the region by 2 million tons.

Uzbekistan extracted 5.73 million tons of coal from January through November 2023. According to data by Uzbekistan’s State Statistics Committee, the recorded number reflects a 19.1 percent, or 1 million tons, increase compared to the same period last year, when Uzbekistan extracted 4.63 million tons of coal.
