(IRNA) - Iran's deputy ambassador to the UN here on Monday said that the pursuit and development of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes is Iran's inalienable right and toward this end it has invested extensive human and material resources.
The Islamic Republic of Iran's Deputy Ambassador to the UN Mehdi Danesh-Yazdi, addressing the 192-member UN General Assembly, focussed on the report of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on Iran's peaceful nuclear activities.
"As repeatedly stated, nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction have no place in Iran's defense doctrine," he stressd.
All reports of the IAEA since 2003 have pointed to the peaceful nature of the Iranian nuclear program, and the agency has repeatedly reaffirmed that it "has not seen any diversion of nuclear material to nuclear weapons or other nuclear explosive devices," the envoy said, adding that IAEA Director General Mohamed ElBaradei's findings and conclusions have been made public a number of times, reports Trend.
It is, however, regrettable that despite all his clear assertions, certain circles, in an ill-intended and politically motivated propaganda campaign, have attempted to distort the facts about Iran's peaceful nuclear program, he said.
A case in point is the recent IAEA denial of certain baseless allegations and distortion of facts contained in a US Congressional report on Iran's nuclear program, Danesh-Yazdi said.
