About two years after international community decided to partially remove international sanctions on Iran following a historic deal on Tehran’s nuclear program, the Middle Eastern nation urges for foreign investment to improve its aviation safety.

The country, in order to develop its airports needs to lure in at least $6 billion in foreign investment, the head of Iran Airports and Air Navigation Company, Rahmatollah Mahabadi, has said.

Mahabadi added that the organization also requires $250 million for purchasing navigation equipment, IRNA news agency reported.

He further stated that renewing technical equipment in airports would contribute to improving aviation safety.

Tehran’s Mehrabad airport hosts 400 flights per day ranking the first among the country’s 54 airports in terms of aircraft movements.

In the meantime about 1,100 international flights fly over Iran and the country itself operates 900 domestic flights per day.

Iran reached a landmark nuclear deal with the US and five other world powers in July 2015 that imposed restrictions on Tehran’s nuclear program in exchange for the removal of nuclear related sanctions on the Islamic Republic.

Iranian officials have accused the US of failing to honor its commitments under the nuclear deal also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
