Major events of transport sector of Azerbaijan in January 2013:
- The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the terms of use of airspace of Azerbaijan. The regulations were approved by decision of the Cabinet on January 15, 2013 and came into force on the date of the signature. These regulations were developed to ensure flights in Azerbaijani airspace are in accordance with the requirements of Article 7.2 of the Aviation law, the Chicago Convention on International Civil Aviation of December 7, 1944, and amendments to it..
- ASC Azeryolservis has announced a tender for the construction and completion of the Masalli - Astara motorway section C, financed by the third tranche of the Multi-tranche Financing Facility of the Asian Development Bank (ADB), which allocated the finds for the highway's construction This civil works contract includes the construction of 19.9 km of dual carriageway highway on a new alignment, two grade separated interchanges, eight bridges as well as drainage works.
- Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) received its first A-340 passenger aircraft manufactured by Airbus. at present, the staff is being trained and the aircraft will soon enter service.
- Baku Metro has begun testing five new carriages produced by Transmashholding JSC. According to Baku Metro, five carriages of the 81-760/761 series are being tested on the metro lines of the Azerbaijani capital. The testing and adaptation process of new carriages on the lines of Baku Metro will last for six months. If the testing is successful and relevant funds allocated from the state budget, these carriages can be purchased for the underground of the Azerbaijani capital. The new carriages are equipped with climate control and air disinfection, as well as heating systems for passenger and driver cabins.
In January 2013, the transport sector in Azerbaijan transported 16.4 million tons, which is similar to last year's numbers. Of the total volume of goods transported in January, 70.5 percent fell to the private sector.
Some 51.1 percent of all cargo was transported by road, 30.8 percent - by pipelines, 11.6 percent - by railway and 6.5 percent - by sea.
About 124.5 million people used transport in January, which is 8.7 percent more than the same period of 2012. Most of the passengers were transported by road transport (86.1 percent) and metro (13.7 percent).
Automobile transport takes the lion share in the transport field of the country. Some 8.3 million tons of cargo was transported by road transport, which is 7.6 percent more than in January 2012. The volume of passenger traffic totaled 107.1 million (increase by 8.5 percent). Some 96.7 percent of the passengers were transported by buses and 3.3 percent - by cars.
Freight turnover by road during the period grew by 7.7 percent during the reporting period, and passenger turnover - by 9.4 percent.
In January this year, some 1.9 million tons of cargo were transported by rail, compared to 2 million tons in January 2012.
The number of loaded carriages made up 690, in average per day and unloaded - 477. Average daily load of carriages in the northern direction is 28,300 tons and in western direction 5,400 tons and southern direction - 4,600 tons.
Maritime transport carried 1.1 million tons of cargo compared to 1.2 million tons in January 2012. All cargo accounted for international operations. The volume of goods handled in ports in Azerbaijan in January amounted to 1.2 million tons, or 1.6 percent more than the same period last year.
Some 60.8 percent of cargo shipping fell on oil and oil products, while 39.2 percent on dry cargo. Volume of international transit cargos processed in January increased by 3.5 percent. As of Feb.1, 2013, 5,500 tons of cargo left in the ports for import, which is 50 percent less compared to the same period of last year.
In January, the export via oil pipelines made up 3.6 million tons. During this period, 75 percent or 2.8 million tons of oil was transported via the BTC (data provided by the State Statistics Committee). In January Sangachal terminal transported 196,400 tons of Turkmen oil via BTC.
Transportation via gas pipelines made up 2 billion cubic meters or 4.9 percent less compared to January 2012. Some 18.4 percent of the transported gas fell on South Caucasus Pipeline. Some 0.4 billion cubic meters of gas was transported via this pipeline.
Some 118,100 passengers were transported by air transport, which is 11.7 percent more than in January 2012. Some 1.5 percent of traffic by this kind of transport fell to private sector. The volume of cargo transportation by air increased by 12.9 percent in January.
Some 17 million people were transported by metro (a 10.6 percent growth).
Some 56.9 million tons of cargo was transported through the Eurasian transport corridor through the territory of Azerbaijan, which is 5.5 percent more than in 2011. Some 260.9 million people were transported through the corridor, which is 8 percent more than in 2011.
