Prices and situation in consumer market in Azerbaijan (January-May 2017)

According to the State Statistics Committee, as of January-May 2017, 16.4 billion manat accounted for the Azerbaijani consumer market, which is by 1.5 percent more than its turnover for January-May 2016.

The monthly consumer expenses are estimated at 338.2 manat per capita in January-May 2017 or by 42.9 manat more compared to January-May 2016.

The retail trade turnover amounted to 12.9 billion manat in January-May 2017, which is by 1.9 percent more than in January-May 2016.

Legal entities ensured 11.4 percent of the trade turnover.

Some 266.2 manat account for the people’s shopping monthly in January-May 2017, which is by 37.2 manat more than in January-May 2016.

According to the Azerbaijani State Statistics Committee, food trade (6.529 million manat) increased by 0.8 percent in real terms in January-May 2017.

Some 6,389.3 million manat (2.9 percent of real growth) accounted for the retail sales of non-food products.

Paid services worth 3,023.5 million manat were rendered to the population in January-May 2017 or by 0.1 percent more compared to January-May 2016. Legal entities ensured 73.2 percent of this growth and rendered the services worth 2,213.2 million manat.

Every citizen of the country used paid services worth 311 manat per month in January-May 2017, which is by 23.4 manat more than in January-May 2016.

Transportation, public utilities and communication services prevail in the structure of paid services.

Prices

According to the State Statistics Committee, the prices on consumer goods and tariffs for services increased by 0.2 percent in May 2017 compared to April 2017.

The food prices decreased by 1.3 percent, non-food items increased by 0.2 percent, paid services – by 2.1 percent in Azerbaijan during the reporting period.

The prices on consumer goods and tariffs for services increased by 13.8 percent in Azerbaijan in January-May 2017 compared to January-May 2016.

The food prices increased by 18.2 percent, non-food items - by 12.5 percent, paid services – 9.1 percent in Azerbaijan during this period.

During the month, the prices on rice, butter, cheese, juices, spirits, coffee, tea, cocoa, onions, potatoes, carrots and pumpkins increased.

The prices on macaroni, buckwheat, beef, chicken and mutton, fish products, milk, eggs, sunflower oil and corn oil, sugar and granulated sugar, tobacco products, tomatoes, cucumbers, greens, cabbage and eggplants decreased.

During the reporting period, prices on furniture and household utensils, carpets and other floor coverings, spare parts for cars, office supplies, jewelry, vacuum cleaners, bicycles, TV sets, personal computers, tablets, building materials (brick, cement, water pipelines and sewer pipes, ceramic plates, metal tiles). The prices on laminate, window glass, paints, mobile phones, laptops decreased in May.

The prices on other goods were not greatly changed for the month.

The prices on travel vouchers to other countries, international passenger transportation by air and rail, rent of apartments, household appliances, cars, furniture, household utensils, flooring repair, dental services increased in May.

The base index of consumer prices, calculated except for the goods and services subject to seasonal changes (fruits and vegetables) increased by 12.8 percent in January-May 2017 compared to January-May 2016.

Various factors affect inflation in Azerbaijan. In particular, inflation is not only monetary. The world prices and a number of other factors affect it.

The producer prices on industrial products decreased by 1.9 percent in Azerbaijan in May 2017 compared to April 2017.

During the reporting period, producer prices in the mining industry decreased by 2.5 percent, while in the manufacturing industry – 0.3 percent.

The producer prices on industrial products increased by 57.7 percent in January-May 2017 compared to January-May 2016, while the producer prices in the mining industry - by 61.9 percent and manufacturing industry – 34.4 percent.
