An intense fire fight took place during the stay of Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili at the Georgian military base at Shukvani in Afghanistan, the president's administration said on Thursday.
Following the shooting the president, who conveyed New Year greetings to the Georgian military, contacted the soldiers at the frontline congratulating them with having repelled the Taliban attack.
The president told the soldiers he wanted them to return home. "We are very proud of you," he said.
