Istanbul - leader in number of cars driven in Turkey

Istanbul had the biggest share of cars driven in Turkey, among all of the country's cities in January 2020, Trend reports referring to the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK).

The percentage of cars used in Istanbul amounted to 38.1 percent of the total number of cars driven in Turkey.

The percentage of vehicles amounted to 10.2 percent in Ankara, 5.6 percent in Izmir and 4 percent in Antalya.

The remaining 42.1 percent accounted for other cities.

In January 2020, the number of vehicles used in Turkey increased by 42.2 percent compared to January 2019, amounting to 94,540 cars.

In particular, the share of cars in the total number of vehicles in Turkey amounted to 69.8 percent, vans and trucks – 16.4 percent, motorcycles – 6.7 percent, tractors - 3 percent, while 4.1 percent accounted for other vehicles.

The remaining 40.5 percent accounted for other cars.

Turkey ranks sixth in Europe in car production. Ford, Fiat, Renault, Toyota, Honda, Opel, Hyundai, Mercedes-Benz and MAN are assembled in Turkey. Turkey also manufactures local brands of buses such as BMC, Temsa and Otokar.
