6.0 magnitude earthquake near India's Andaman Islands
An earthquake measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale occurred in the Indian Ocean in the region of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands Sunday morning, the Indian Metereological Department (IMD) said.
An aftershock measuring 5.6 was reported about an hour later, the dpa reported.
The IMD did not issue a tsunami warning and there were no reports of damage on the island archipelago.
An earthquake in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Indonesian island Sumatra in 2004 had triggered a tsunami that killed more than 225,000 people in 11 countries. Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, and Thailand were the worst hit.
