Former US vice president Dick Cheney, who suffered his first heart attack at age 37, said Wednesday he underwent heart surgery for installation of a pump device after suffering "increasing congestive heart failure", dpa reported

In a statement posted on newspaper websites, the 69-year-old Cheney said the pump was a "left ventricular assist device (LVAD)" that was implanted to improve his heart function and enable him "to resume an active life."

His latest hospitalization dates back to June, when he was released after a weekend of treatment for his heart condition. He suffered his fifth heart attack in February.

Cheney served a vice president under George W Bush for two terms from 2001-09.

Cheney said that it became clear "a few weeks ago" that he was "entering a new phase of the disease when I began to experience increasing congestive heart failure."

The LVAD is one of the newer technologies, he noted. The surgery was done last week and he was now recuperating.
