Extra measures are needed to protect Russian interests and reinforce its borders in the Arctic, President Dmitry Medvedev told the Federal Security Service (FSB) on Tuesday.

"Additional measures should be taken to protect Russian interests in some parts of the world that are critically important for us, including the Arctic region, as well as the protection of its bio-resources," he said, RIA Novosti reported.

The FSB Frontier Guard Service will be upgraded and provided with modern equipment, he said.

Russia is to deploy by 2020 a combined-arms force to protect its political and economic interests in the Arctic, including military, border and coastal guard units to guarantee Russia's military security in diverse military and political circumstances.
