Iran's population has reached 80 million, ranking 17th in the world, 9th in Asia and 3rd in the region, Ali Akbar Mahzoon, the head of population and immigrant statistics at the Census Organization of Iran said.
He added that the total fertility rate in Iran is very low, IRNA reported.
Mahzoon didn't mentioned any figures, but according to the World Bank's statistics, the total fertility rate in Iran decreased from 6.93 in 1960 to about 1.92 in 2013.
However, the State Civil Registration Organization of Iran announced May 2015 that the country saw a surprise birth rate boom in 2014.
A total of 1.543 million births have been registered between March 2014-2015 nationwide, the report said.
This shows an increase of 2.4 percent year-on-year, which marks the highest rise for the past 23 years.
