An Azerbaijani opposition party will actively partake in the referendum campaign.

"We have not formed a separate referendum group. But we will cooperate with the groups supporting the referendum and join the regional campaign," Vahdat Party Chairman Tahir Karimli told Trend on Feb. 4.

A referendum will take place in Azerbaijan on March 18 to amend 29 articles of the Constitution.

Thirteen initiative groups submitted signature lists to the CEC.

The CEC registered the New Azerbaijan, Shahar and Taraggi initiative groups. Abad Kand was not registered.

The deadline for submitting signature lists to the CEC expired at 18:00 on Feb. 1.

The Constitution was adopted in 1995. Amendments and additions were made in 2002.

Karimli said the party decided to support the amendments to the Constitution in late December.

"We told our members to actively partake in the campaign," the chairman said.

The Vahdat Party led by former Chairman of the Azerbaijani Supreme Court Tahir Karimli was among the opposition in 2006, but currently supports the governing party.
